Day after Valentine's screening of Ank Manchild's "Lost in the Ether" at Anthology Film Archives, an intimate quasi-educational look at shapers and their designs as told by an Australian who actually gives a shit. Has 'narration' as told by Kidman himself, although rumour has it Mish will be doing the next one inna Uki-tinged Cross Bay accent. Speaking of which, classic Parmenter 'goober?' remark about there being, 'too much fashion in surfboards' which encouraged and upset audience members, depending on their cutback. One gracious lady couldn't believe how much she'd learned during the film, visibly relieved when specific questions about 'belly and roll' were explained onscreen. Apparently, 'in Montauk' they like to keep people guessing about the function of certain surfboards. A voice in the crowd of 75 or so admitted to being 'surprised that more people in the New York Surfing community weren't present for such an important film." A gentleman nearby chimed, 'the movie is not for everyone.' It wasn't Andy Kessler or Michael Oppenheimer.

Any closing thoughts on the current state of surfing?
Since the proliferation of surf contests we have been getting further and further away from the original spirit of surfing. At first we were a bunch of misfits who wanted to be away from all the crap going on in society and just lead a simple life away from the landlubbers. It used to be that in order to be a real surfer you had to live a life of ‘less is better,’ one that didn't intrude on the environment. It wasn't about competition but rather sharing and trying to stay away from crowds and simply enjoy the beauty of creation. With contests came the idea of trying to bring crowds to the beach. With contests came the advent of dog-eat-dog positioning and the notion that it is alright to exploit the beaches and surf lifestyle for money.

Once it became acceptable to sell out for money and act like a rat in the lineup, the sportswear companies got involved and the money got bigger. Now nobody even remembers the kind of commitment and values it took to be a surfer. The kids are only learning to be as greedy as possible. The old philosophy of how to be a surfer was something credible and we could have been a strong force against those set on destroying the environment. Instead now we have these lazy wannabes buzzing the lineups in their jet skis and the media portrays this as cool. The guys who want to ride Jaws or Cortes Bank on skis have their place but the problem is too many guys are using them in 6-foot surf and polluting the line up with their fumes, wakes and greed.
And since it has become fashionable to be as greedy as possible, the pop out guys are back, trying to take over the world again with their mass-merchandising schemes. It sort of bugs me that they don't even touch the boards during production and yet they try to portray themselves as real grass roots. There are so many better ways to make big money if that is all they care about. If they don't like working on boards or are incapable of doing so, then they shouldn't do it and instead should become money grabbers in some other context. But to hold themselves out as surfers and to be promoting this crass mass market stuff as if they are doing surfing a favor, they add to the feeling I have about the dilution of the real spirit of surfing. Between them and the contests it’s become quite a different deal and I see no positive benefit. We have lost our souls and respectibility. We have become what we were trying to get away from.

Another example which illustrates the current state of surfing: Have you noticed how now when people paddle out into a line up of other surfers who’ve been out in the water before the new person, the new surfer inevitably paddles right by everyone to take the inside pole position? That used to get you a big slap and sent packing back to the beach with a lecture on having manners in the line up. Since in contests the biggest snake gets the prize, the new school feels justified in their rude, nonsensical approach. If they are so far back that they don't even make one wave, no matter, do the same thing again and again. It’s just an example of what would have been completely taboo before is now the only thing the kids are learning.

Also, have you noticed how often now kids come to the beach with a car load of buddies? How rare it is to see someone come to the beach by themselves? Used to be special to go surfing alone and try to find moments to commune with nature. Or at least if you entered the line up alone, guys in the line up might accept you as somebody who had a clue. Now its like if they go in a gang they can all be rude together so nobody can do much about it.

Anyway enough of the negative side of what now passes for surfers and surfing. In some ways things are better for the custom guys and there will always be a demand for a nice custom board. I have more orders than ever, however, after spending your whole life devoted to what was originally a beautiful, different style of life, it's kind of hard to see the sell out mentality completely diminish the foundation it continues to reap from. Well time to stop talking about it and paddle out.

New York’s Urban Aloha
By THAD ZIOLKOWSKI

WHEN the world’s best surfers come to Long Beach, N.Y., next month to compete for a record million-dollar purse in the Quiksilver Pro New York, a new event on professional surfing’s world tour, they might be forgiven for using Google Earth to locate the place. Compared with Australia and California and Hawaii, where Quiksilver established its pre-eminence as a beachwear company, New York barely registers on the surfing atlas.

There’s good reason for that: the waves are typically pretty meager here, the winters long and stoke-extinguishing. The competition is scheduled for the first two weeks of September, when the odds of hurricane swells are at their statistical best. Still, as locals will tell you, that’s quite a roll of the dice. If showcasing the underappreciated athleticism of surfing is the goal, why not hold the contest in, say, Fiji or Mexico, where the waves would be far more likely to prove worthy of the surfers?

Perhaps because Quiksilver is coming to town less for great surf than for greater market share.

In the past decade or so, surfing has undergone a worldwide boom in popularity, especially among women and urban professionals in their 20s and 30s. Tom Hanks surfs; Cameron Diaz, too. Surf schools and spa-like resorts, the fastest-growing segment of the surf economy, have sprung up, further altering the character of a sport that was once the realm of working- and middle-class adolescent males and young men whose initiations at local beaches were typically prolonged and humiliating.

Meanwhile, older surfers, who in previous generations would have put aside this childish thing, have kept on surfing or returned to it after a hiatus, in large part because of the renaissance of kinder, gentler designs like the longboard and stand-up paddleboard.

As if suddenly remembering that it’s a coastal city, New York has been swept up in the urban surf craze along with San Francisco and Los Angeles. And why not? New York may not have abundant, grade-A surf but ridable waves are as close as Far Rockaway, Queens, about an hour from Manhattan on the subway.

In New York City, slipping off to ride waves virtually within view of granite Gotham provides a unique, slightly illicit, dreamlike pleasure. Surfing shouldn’t be possible here, and yet it is.

Artists, writers and others in trend-conscious fields are plugged in to New York’s surf scene now, but most of the rest of the city is not, and riding the subway with a board clasped to one’s chest like a dance partner still elicits smiles and queries from otherwise game-faced straphangers. There is something disarming about the sight of a surfboard in New York, where it has a nutty, quixotic quality, like a pair of wings.

When New York City surfers cross paths, they greet one another, exchange notes. Because so many of them are new to surfing, having taken it up in adulthood, they are less like seen-it-all New Yorkers than surfers in pre-“Gidget” California, who would pull over when they passed another car of surfers and introduce themselves. Anyone who has surfed in Santa Cruz or Huntington Beach — chilly, xenophobic “surf cities” — knows how exceptional this urban aloha is.

And if surfing has a soul, it is aloha: welcome, hospitality, generosity without thought of recompense. The word is Hawaiian, of course, and Hawaiians are the ones who gave surfing to the rest of the world. The bitter irony is that the rest of the world returned the favor with a vengeance, and Hawaii’s storied line-ups, flooded by outsiders, are now as famous for being jam-packed and short-tempered as for the waves.

Which is why Quiksilver’s descent on Long Beach is so ominous. Imprinting the Quiksilver brand on New York’s burgeoning surf scene makes perfect sense from a business perspective, but the corporate siren song threatens to sour the mood of surfing in New York, which for the moment remains a bastion of surf spirit. It’s a spirit that companies like Quiksilver claim to value but have in fact helped degrade elsewhere, peddling a vision of surfing’s blithe, blue allure that studiously omits the ugly realities of overcrowding that such marketing abets.

Come what may in the way of waves next month at Long Beach, Quiksilver will do its utmost to lure more people to the sport — and to the cash registers. In an atmosphere of staid, commodified carnival, tents will be emblazoned with sponsor names; top pros will sign posters of themselves riding waves that bear scant resemblance to the nearby surf; and swag will be given away to a milling crowd. There will be a few media types and the odd celebrity, including the 10-time world champion Kelly Slater, and young Balaram Stack, a homegrown star.

Even with such talent on offer, the contest itself may well prove a somewhat dull, obscure affair. Surfing just doesn’t lend itself naturally to formal competition: waves prove too fickle in the best of conditions, and the judging criteria, periodically rewritten though they are, tend to produce relatively safe, conservative performances. The most avid fans of pro surfing are former pro surfers.

And should a good hurricane swell grace the event, a sizable portion of the audience will probably be catching waves of their own rather than spectating along the boardwalk. From Breezy Point to Montauk, the breaks will be stippled with the seal-like forms of surfers celebrating a spontaneous pagan holiday, work and school happily spurned.

It’s not hard to imagine New York’s urban aloha going the way of its Polynesian progenitor, but for the moment a genial, just-folks atmosphere reigns. That’s because it’s still possible to find a bit of ocean to oneself here. And if living in New York proves anything, it’s that it only takes a little — quiet, green, surf — to suffice.

Would that Quiksilver and its confreres learn the same lesson.

It was Friday August 9, 2009 and Kess was on his way to Montauk for the weekend. He spoke of recent sesh at a secluded spot where he got caught inside and royally worked over. It was early in the season for 'this kind of punishment' and was pumped to get himself into heavier situations come September. His quiver was coming together (not these boards), he was getting in better shape, paddling more and feeling confident. He died three days later. NYSFF: Update on Lawsuit & 2011 Festival

From 2008 to 2010, Don’t Drop In, LLC has owned and operated the New York Surf Film Festival with great success. On October 13, 2010, just a month after the conclusion of the 2010 festival, Morgan Rae Berk, a founding member of Don’t Drop In and the New York Surf Film Festival, sued Don’t Drop In, LLC and the three other founding members, Tyler Breuer, Adam Cannizzaro and Michael Machemer in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Additionally, Berk sued a festival volunteer and a surf website operator.

In her lawsuit, Berk alleges that she created the festival and that she alone owns the name New York Surf Film Festival. Don’t Drop In and the individual DDI defendants deny all of the allegations in Berk’s Complaint and have counterclaimed, alleging that she, among other offenses, misappropriated the New York Surf Film Festival name, logo and other intellectual property related to the ownership and promotion of the New York Surf Film Festival. Berk has also asserted other claims, including defamation, against the members of Don’t Drop In and the above-referenced festival volunteer and surf website operator.

In the opinion of the three founding members of the New York Surf Film Festival she sued, Berk has undermined the festival’s past success and threatened the viability of the New York Surf Film Festival going forward. It is the understanding of defendants Breuer, Cannizzaro and Machemer that Berk has issued a call for submissions to the 2011 New York Surf Film Festival using the disputed New York Surf Film Festival name, trademarks and logo. They also understand that she has requested that filmmakers submit their work directly to her home address and has engaged in negotions with potential sponsors and vendors of the 2011 New York Surf Film Festival without the consent or authorization of Don’t Drop In or the individual members of Don’t Drop In. Breuer, Cannizzaro and Machemer are concerned that Berk’s call for submissions and her negotiations with potential sponsors and vendors in connection with the prospective 2011 New York Surf Film Festival have caused confusion for filmakers, sponsors and vendors about the festival and the mark . In response to Berk’s lawsuit, Don’t Drop In and Breuer, Cannizzaro and Machemer insist that the New York Surf Film Festival name, logo and all related trademarks are the property of Don’t Drop In, not Morgan Rae Berk, individually.

Don’t Drop In and Breuer, Cannizzaro and Machemer are proud of the work they have done to make the New York Surf Film Festival such a success over the years and are hopeful that the current dispute raised by Berk’s lawsuit will be resolved shortly. As the litigation proceeds, Don’t Drop In and Breuer, Cannizzaro and Machemer wish to thank all of the filmmakers, sponsors, vendors and fans who have supported the festival over the years and have been integral to its past (and hopefully future) success. The JMJ trio considers their music to be a part of the rich tradition of ambient music and trace their influences back to Erik Saties "furniture music" and John Cages ideas of inclusiveness. The environmental re-structuring found in the tape works of Luc Ferrari and Pierre Schaefer also contributed to the work in both sound and process. Contemporaries who have inspired the JMJ trio include such artists as Helen Said This-era Dead C, K-Group / Surface of the Earth, Omit, Dean Roberts, and Rafael Toral. Recording for In the Absence of the Third began in Oyster Bay, New York during the winter of 2000 and continued through the summer and fall months at the Library in New York City, using a simple four-track cassette recorder to document improvisations performed on alternately tuned and prepared guitars. The recording sessions were inspired in part from the ideas developed by the Nordoff-Robbins School of Musical Therapy; namely, that ones innate creativity can be expressed through improvisation, and that this exploration can positively address emotional, cognitive, and developmental needs. Additional sounds were drawn from the different recording spaces and from field recordings of the surrounding environment. Preliminary selections were digitized at The 402 Annex in October of the same year; recording, editing and mixing continued until the following spring. Improvisations were structured and re-structured in the digital medium through intuitive means. The goal was to layer sonic textures with shifting sound events that allowed the pieces to evolve. The JMJ Trio strove for music that dictated its own form, which re-invented itself within its own parameters. The living space became a crucial part in the creation of these sound events -- when someone unlocks the front door and slams it shut, the answering machine interrupting a recording session, St. Nicholas Avenue as a rain-slicked cavern, the sustained crackling of steam radiators throughout the apartment. The improvisations happened while life happened around us. In the Absence of the Third is packaged with silk screened and hand painted covers and is available in a limited edition of 250.

"THE JMJ TRIO - IN THE ABSENCE OF THE THIRD (LP by Ontological Records)
Housed in a partly silkscreened and handpainted cover comes this
limited LP of recordings made at home, in the living room. Despite
the fact that it's called a trio, I can see only the names of two
players, Tim Elder and Michael Machemer. I assume they both play
guitars, as this is an album of improvised guitar playing. Not the
kind of heavy, free improv noise, but rather soft and tinkling guitar
music, made like light weight space because of the use reverb, echo,
chorus and what have you got. Six lenghty pieces of ambient like
music, Isolationist as this was once called. A bit like Rafael Toral
(but maybe more rockier), Stars Of The Lid, Ultrasound or some of the
more softer lo-fi guitar groups from down under. The JMJ Trio would
have sounded great on the "Women Taken In Adultry' compilation,
reviewed elsewhere. And that is all a big compliment; nice stuff
indeed."

"Getting the opportunity to listen to (and review) music from someone you consider a friend is always a bit troublesome, because there's always a point when you'll have to face the person in question and let him or her know what you actually think. I'm relieved to report that Broken Face writer Tim Elder and musical compadre Michael Machemer who work as JMJ Trio have what it takes, and they deliver it in spades on their debut LP. Before discussing the music I should let you know that when I got this LP I could do nothing for a few minutes but stare at it and touch the hand-painted silkscreen covers. The packaging is just gorgeous and clearly a labor of love and passion, and it's not hard to see that it took at least one or two perfectionists in action to realize this record. But let's now dive deep into the oceanic guitar improvisations which are In the Absence of the Third. What we're served with are six pieces of lush ambient soundscapes and droning haziness, which comes from alternately tuned and prepared electric guitars, effects, and various field recordings. One could trace this recording back to some of the floating sonic icebergs that have appeared on the Corpus Hermeticum label as well as to the music of Oren Ambarchi and Rafael Toral, but there's also a distant predilection for musique concrete experiments nodding towards something more extreme. The general feel is like sitting right in front of some tone generator that sends out sound particles from beyond, creating almost weightless gossamers of sound waves from a strong compositional ability. I'd be happy to see more along these lines when exploring other contemporary minimalists' works. If you share our interest in some of the greatest minimalists and aren't afraid of finding as much emotion as compositional sense packed within each tone, then you'll love this as much as I do.
